SCULPTURAL MONOCHROME VASES
Hand built ceramic vases decorated with layers of abstract monochrome pattern.
The vases have a distinctive silhouette, with gently inclined sides and an asymmetric rim. The surface is covered with textural black marks over an ombre background.
The vases are hand built using a combination of moulds and slab building techniques. It's a gradual process done over several days, so the clay is at the right firmness for each stage of construction. The design is created using silk screens, lace and found objects to print abstract patterns directly onto the surface of the vases and to monoprint using gel plates. It's an organic process and no two vases are the same. The vases are fired to 1,225°C which vitrifies the clay and seals its surface. The final stage is polishing the vases to achieve a smooth pebble-like finish.
